Introduction
Akili (“Akili,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) provides a human development platform that helps young people build life skills and enables the coaches, facilitators, and organizations who support them to track growth and outcomes. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, how we share it, and the choices and rights available to users, parents, guardians, and organizations.
This policy applies to the Akili website, web application, and mobile applications (collectively, the “Service”).
Because the Service is used by and on behalf of minors, we take special care with children’s information, as described in Section 8.
Who Uses the Service
The Service is used by:
- Young people (participants), who may include minors between the ages of 8 and 17, enrolled through a participating school, program, or organization, or with parental/guardian involvement;
- Coaches and facilitators, who support participants;
- Administrators, at organizations that license the platform.
Minors access the Service only through a participating organization or with parental/guardian consent, as described in Section 8.
Information We Collect
Depending on role, we may collect:
- Account and identity information: name, email address, and login credentials (authentication is provided through our authentication vendor).
- Profile information: role, organization, site/group assignment, and, where provided, age or grade level.
- Learning and development data: responses to activities and assessments, competency scores, goals, journal entries, and progress within the platform.
- Usage information: how the Service is accessed and used, including device and log information.
- Communications: messages you send to us (for example, support or contact requests).
How We Use Information
We use information to:
- Provide, operate, and maintain the Service;
- Deliver learning experiences and generate progress, competency, and outcome information for participants, coaches, and organizations;
- Support and communicate with users;
- Maintain the safety, security, and integrity of the Service;
- Comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell personal information. We do not use participant information to serve third-party advertising.
AI Features
The Service includes AI-assisted features (for example, guided tutoring). To provide these, relevant content is processed by our AI provider.
How We Share Information
We share information only as follows:
- With the participant's organization (school, program, or organization) and its authorized coaches/administrators, to deliver and measure the program;
- With service providers who process information on our behalf under contract, including authentication, hosting, database, email delivery, and AI processing vendors;
- With parents or guardians, as applicable;
- As required by law, or to protect rights, safety, and security.
We do not sell personal information or share it for third-party advertising.
Education Records (FERPA)
Where Akili processes student education records on behalf of a school or educational agency, we act as a “school official” with a legitimate educational interest under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and applicable state student-privacy laws, and we use such records only for the purposes authorized by the educational institution.
Children's Privacy (COPPA)
Protecting children’s privacy is a priority. For participants under the age of 13:
- We collect personal information only with appropriate consent — obtained through the participating school or organization acting on behalf of parents, or directly from a parent or guardian, as applicable;
- We collect only information reasonably necessary to provide the Service;
- We do not condition participation on disclosing more information than necessary;
- Parents/guardians and authorized organizations may review, request deletion of, and refuse further collection of a child's information by contacting us (Section 12).
Data Retention
We retain personal information only as long as necessary to provide the Service and for legitimate, documented business or legal purposes, after which it is deleted or de-identified. Organizations and parents/guardians may request deletion as described in Section 12.
Security
We use administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect information consistent with the sensitivity of the data we handle.
Your Rights and Choices
Depending on your location and role, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict use of personal information. Parents/guardians and organizations may exercise these rights on behalf of participants. To make a request, contact us using Section 12.
